What To Do Immediately After a Car Accident?

If you’ve been in a car accident, there are many things you should do to ensure you get the right coverage for your car and for yourself. It’s important that you do what’s necessary to receive the right compensation, especially if you’re not at fault.

No one plans to get in a motor vehicle accident, but when it happens, many of us aren’t prepared. We usually know not to move the car and to call the police, but once the initial shock ends, we can be at a complete loss. Here’s what to do immediately after a car accident so you can be prepared to make the right decisions.

We usually know not to move the car and to call the police, but once the initial shock ends, we can be at a complete loss. Here’s what to do immediately after a car accident so you can be prepared to make the right decisions.

Call the Police.

There were over 16,000 collisions reported in 2019, but many more go unreported that should have been. In Ontario, all collisions where an injury has occurred or damage over $2000 need to be reported to Police immediately by phone. They will advise you whether they need to come to the scene or you will need to report to their Collision Reporting Centre. Sometimes those in a collision will decide to walk away from the scene and settle the issue without resorting to Police involvement, but this can backfire if you later find out you or your car has more internal damage than first believed.

Report to Your Insurance.

Keeping the above in mind, if you don’t have a police report, often insurance will charge you more in premiums or won’t cover any damages to your vehicle. You should always, always report any collision to your insurance company. Ultimately, it’s your decision if you want to pay for the damage out of pocket if it’s minor and only to your own property. However, if there is an injury involved things change.

Seek Medical Help and Rehabilitation.

Don’t wait too long after an accident to seek medical help. Even if you don’t think you were injured too badly, seeing a doctor and putting anything in writing now will protect you if there are any legal actions taken.

Your car accident recovery should also include some form of rehabilitation. There are usually options available for any budget, whether you’re insured or not. If you’ve been in an accident, your doctor or the one assigned to you at your local hospital will have the ability to refer you for physiotherapy or rehabilitation in some form that will be covered by OHIP. Depending on the severity of the accident, you could benefit from acupuncture, registered massage therapy, chiropractic therapy, and more.  There are also many assisted devices that can help you recover after an automobile accident.

If you’ve been hurt in a car accident in the Ottawa area, speak to your doctor about rehabilitation. It doesn’t matter how bad you think you’re hurt and whether you believe you may recover on your own, issues and health problems linked to your collision can arise later down the road (no pun intended).
